Is it time to turn the page on CLIA 1988?

Article Abstract:

Clinical laboratories in physicians' offices should continue to meet performance standards even if a law mandating these standards is repealed. The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988 (CLIA) was passed partly to regulate physicians' office labs (POLs). In the past, most labs were located in hospitals and independent facilities. However, POLs allow specimen samples to be analyzed much more quickly, possibly resulting in a quicker diagnosis. Many physicians believe CLIA is burdensome and Congress is considering a bill that would exempt POLs from CLIA. But it would still be in the best interest of POLs to meet some kind of performance standard.

Heat and dust

Article Abstract:

Doctors caring for people on the Caribbean island of Montserrat are seeing many children with bronchial and asthmatic problems caused by acrid volcanic ash which has enveloped the island. People have been given dust masks but the ash contains quartz and this may have long-term affects on the people's health. Sanitation is also a problem because the people have no cookers or refrigerators and are in danger of contracting cholera or gastroenteritis. Many medical staff have left the island, leaving the remaining staff struggling to cope.
