Life gets a good site better

Article Abstract:

The city government of Porto Alegre, Brazil, sought to improve the quality of life for slum-dwellers in the deprived Cai-Cai area of the city by relocating the entire community to a newly-built site tailored to meet the residents' own needs and expectations. The project incorporated various city departments, such as the housing, education, waste disposal and health departments, with environmental initiatives introduced in conjunction with structural and economic initiatives. A health facility, brick houses and a school were built, and residents offered employment at a new waste-processing plant.

Good old home cooking

Article Abstract:

Dieticians in Nottinghamshire, England, surveyed nursing homes about the nutritional adequacy of meals served on the premises. Questionnaires from 96 nursing homes included data on the use of measuring equipment in the kitchen, on who had responsibility for menu selection, on procedures for weighing residents and on dietary record-keeping. The researchers noted that cooks had the major input in menu planning and that few homes checked body mass index along with weight. They recommended that nutritional training for staff, and the supply and maintenance of kitchen scales, be improved.

Reading the BANS

Article Abstract:

The British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition set up a database called the British Artificial Nutrition Survey as a means of auditing the extent and standards of nutritional care being provided by hospitals in the United Kingdom. National Health Service trusts which have registered on the database get frequent feedback which they can use to check that they are meeting recommended standards and also to highlight any weaknesses. The data from the survey will also be used in strategic health care planning.
