Re-examining care for the dying: AMA: education key to making end-of-life decisions

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) plans to launch a profession-wide educational program to transform how physicians approach end-of-life clinical care and ethical issues. The AMA plans to directly instruct 10% of all American physicians and to provide educational materials for all physicians charged with direct patient care. Although the association does not condone legalized physician-assisted suicide, it remains committed to providing solutions for easing patient suffering.

Doctors, unions often not a good match

Article Abstract:

Many physicians and medical residents are increasingly wondering if unionizing can help alleviate their frustrations with managed care insurers. Unionizing is not be an option for many physicians, and may not be the best option for those physicians who are eligible to join unions. The American Medical Assn is working to give physicians a greater voice in legislations affecting health insurance and managed care.
