Regression of left ventricular hypertrophy: how and why?

Article Abstract:

There is much evidence that left ventricular hypertrophy increases the risk of chronic heart disease. Left ventricular hypertrophy is an enlargement of the left ventricle of the heart. Many physicians believe that the risk of developing heart disease can be lowered by reducing left ventricular hypertrophy. However, this has not been proven. Many of the studies of the drug treatment of left ventricular hypertrophy are flawed. A 1996 meta-analysis of these studies found that only 39 out of 471 were randomized, controlled trials. This review found that drug treatment can reduce left ventricular hypertrophy, and the greatest reductions in left ventricular hypertrophy were associated with large drops in blood pressure and long treatment. ACE inhibitors were most effective in reducing left ventricular hypertrophy. However, even these studies focused on white men and used brief treatment periods. More research needs to be done on the health effects of reducing left ventricular hypertrophy.
