Shock waves
Article Abstract:
Disasters can be broadly divided into two types: manmade and natural. Manmade disasters are found to be more difficult to cope with than natural catastrophes, which have a certain inevitability about them. Those involved in manmade disasters often look for someone to blame to give the event some meaning. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is now recognized as a condition resulting from the effects of disaster. The symptoms of PTSD are outlined and a discussion on how people and organizations can be helped to return to normal following a crisis is presented.

Shock waves
Article Abstract:
Industrial accidents were the cause of two deaths and more than 3,000 injuries per day, according to Tony Linehan, Chief Inspector of Factories, in Nov 1991. Often the company involved is not prepared to deal with the event. A 'risk audit' is suggested to target possible problem areas. Methods of handling events after an accident should be examined, including the type of support to be offered to those directly and indirectly involved. The importance of well-planned and rapid response to emergency situations is detailed.

Emergency plans: a step-by-step guide
Article Abstract:
Techniques for developing a comprehensive emergency plan are presented. A good emergency plan would enable any organization to cope with large-scale disasters and other emergencies. The techniques include the identification of all relevant issues and factors, evaluation of the issues, plan development, plan analysis and plan implementation. Emergency plans should also have a media- and public-relations component to prevent the spread of negative opinions, rumors and unsubstantiated theories.
