Survey surprises

Article Abstract:

An AA Foundation for Road Safety Research report, undertaken by Southampton University's transportation research group and psychology department, has found that road safety education needs to be changed. Young male drivers, before taking their driving tests, should be instructed in the social influences on driving, including drinking, mood, music and the effect of the behaviour of their contemporaries, parents, and passengers. Many males in the 17-24 age group are over-confident and consider themselves safe drivers, not always rightly so, and as a result risks are taken.

Survey of OH professionals

Article Abstract:

Relationships with line managers and staff are good among all four of the main occupational health specialities in the UK, according to research from the Industrial Relations Services. However, there are significant differences between occupational physicians, occupational health nurses, occupational health hygienists and health and safety managers in other areas of their work. Occupational health nurses are least likely to feel valued in their work, while occupational physicians are most likely to have management responsibility.

Dermatitis survey results

Article Abstract:

Up to 70% of UK builders may be placing themselves at risk of contracting dermatitis because they fail to take proper protection by using gloves, according to a survey carried out by Marigold Industries. Builders who did take precautions to protect themselves failed to ensure they changed gloves often enough, thus increasing the risk of skin disease. Many injuries or infections resulted from contact with materials such as bricks, petrol or wood, although the majority of builders considered these to be every day risks.
