Handhelds check in at the hospital
Article Abstract:
Symbol Technologies PPT 4300 is being utilized by the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA as value-added clipboards. The hand-held data devices, used as part of a beta test, are capable of streamlined data entry, data transmission and transport of essential, correct data to remote areas of the hospital, where it is needed most. According to Symbol spokesman, the hospital industry is in a cost-cutting mode and is investing in technology to save them time and effort. Tools that reduce costs and improve care are being examined to combat the financial squeeze. The PPT 4300 saves nurses the time and energy of running back and forth between patients and fixed computer terminals. The device could also lessen the amount of times a patient must be moved by having data collection move to the patient. The hospital's patient care coordinator says the best aspect of the PPT 4300 is its ability to help hospital staff with paperwork.

Impeachmentese: a full (not fulsome) complement of synonyms for rebuke, some more purifying than others
Article Abstract:
The impeachment of Bill Clinton has generated copious written and verbal analyses of the presidential scandal. Most of these have addressed Clinton's punishment, humility and apology. Columnist Jim Hoagland's referred to Clinton as being `chastised, if not chastened,' but in doing used one synonym to negate the other. When he wrote, also, that Clinton had been `humiliated, if not humbled,' he stretched the extent of his resultant disgrace and meekness. Sen Charles Schumer's reference to Clinton's `fulsome apology' reflected an abuse of the word fulsome which means excessive, if not disgusting.

The Crystal Ear hearing aid
Article Abstract:
The Crystal Ear hearing aid is an inexpensive hearing aid that uses standard analog technology with a linear amplifier. These types of hearing aids amplify soft and loud sounds equally and may be useless in noisy environments. Consequently, it may not be adequate for many hearing-impaired patients. It is a one-size-fits-all design and may be hard for many elderly people to handle. The Crystal Ear hearing aid is available only via mail order from Comtrad Industries and sells for $299.89 plus shipping and handling.
