Adoption of philosophies that give importance to innovation and continuous improvement proves to be effective in achieving succesful organizational performance. Velden Engineering (UK) Ltd., a subcontract engineering company, is an example of a business firm that successfully achieved quality organizational performance through continuous improvement and empowerment of employees. The company effectively counteracted serious setbacks, such as the recession of the early 1990s, by means of building a workforce that is dedicated to quality improvement and effective management. It successfully incorporated the ideas of continuous improvement and innovation to its cultural framework.

Product design process has the ability to integrate various segments of an organization. With increasing competition in the marketplace and improved manufacturing processes, product design will require a multidisciplinary team that takes into account every conceivable factor needed to successfully position the product in the marketplace. This formation of a multidisciplinary team is one of the forms of concurrent engineering that is being implemented to give a holistic approach in the development of a product.

Market and technical factors that have influenced the development of fiber optic components are investigated, with focus on strategic management issues. They include system price and performance, economic conditions, market acceptance, market size and the rate of technological innovation. Market factors are found to be generally predictable. A forecasting equation for the average prices of the major fiber optic component groups is developed using the historical data.
