Management and organization through 100 years
Article Abstract:
A survey of various management theories and fads that have come and gone is presented. The study of management became systematic since the turn of the century when the emphasis was on the formal structure and autocratic leadership. Schools that have sprung up since then include the human oriented school, which emphasized participative leadership and self control, and the Japanese management school, which was popular in the 1980s. The plethora of theories notwithstanding, a universal organization theory is still lacking.
