Louder than words
Article Abstract:
A staff nurse describes how she helped a dying patient come to terms with leaving her two children. The patient was admitted to a hospice for symptom control of advanced bowel cancer. She was experiencing total pain involving the physical, social, psychological and spiritual aspects of being. The patient had preferred not to tell her children that she was dying, but through interpretation of her body language, this was found to be contributing to her pain. She was eventually able to tell the children she was dying, and her carers were able to identify the children's needs.

Swiss risk losing role
Article Abstract:
Switzerland is to vote on a proposal which, if passed, would impose severe restrictions on genetic research. Switzerland already has laws protecting animals which are more restrictive than those in force elsewhere. The Gene Protection Initiative could result in the banning of patents for transgenic plants and animals, the release of transgenic life forms, and the acquisition and production of transgenic animals. This would have serious implications for scientific research.
