Article Abstract:
The Council of Doges in 1608 authorized the first postal stationery with stamps to be used to collet revenue for the maintenance of the canals and bridges of Venice. The letters were stopped in 1797. Prepaid stationery was issued in 1608 because an earlier attempt in 1604 was not successful.
