Alien Odyssey
Article Abstract:
Philips Media Games' $49.99 Alien Odyssey offers a strong mix of adventure and action enhanced by impressive graphics, voices and music. Alien Odyssey is a buddy adventure game that pairs the main character, named Psaph, with an alien named Gaan. Psaph and Gaan move through arcade sequences and shooting action, fighting against an evil race of half machine/half alien beings. The strongest element of the game is its action/adventure segments, which include shifting camera angles and well-integrated rendered sequences. The games also includes complex puzzles and lengthy cut scenes that move the plot along. On the downside, the arcade sequences are simplistic when compared with the adventure sequences, and the overall objectives of each level are only explained briefly. Although the story itself is not particularly engaging, the game has a quirky edge that most users will find surprising.

Destruction Derby
Article Abstract:
Sony Psygnosis' $49.95 Destruction Derby is a superbly detailed game that allows players to experience all the metal-twisting, heart-pounding excitement of a demolition derby and stock car race. The game offers exceptional graphics, realistic damage and excellent camera angles. Different player viewpoints, one from inside the car and two from outside, provide multiple perspectives as cars collide and spin out. In the stock car race, players race against some 20 other drivers on five tracks. It combines the realism of NASCAR racing with a lot of bang-up action. Dangerous double intersections and tight turns result in spectacular pileups. A great feature is the replay option, which lets players view races and derbies in their entirety. On the downside, the sound effects could use some improvements and the walls sometimes flicker during wrecks.

Hardball 5
Article Abstract:
Accolade's $49.95 Hardball 5 is still the best-looking baseball simulation game on the market, although some of the action is unrealistic. The game is perfect for baseball fans who are fascinated by the strategic side of Major League Baseball. It includes 12 old-time ball parks and 28 major league stadiums. Hardball's new Big Batter view makes hitting more enjoyable and improves the look of the game. Its strategic elements, such as tracking stats and other options, are top-notch. On the downside, the game's computer players are too good and rarely strike out. The method for starting a season is overly complex and some of the uniforms are inappropriate for the historical teams. The commentary by Al Michaels is great, but other sound effects are unimpressive.
