The debate over whether to use an autofocus SLR or a point-and-shoot (P/S) is irrelevant because different kinds of photo opportunities dictate which equipment is appropriate. SLRs are unbeatable when telephoto and macro shots are needed. P/S cameras function better under spontaneous conditions.

Captiva released at last! Polaroid's latest instant-picture camera is a compact autofocus SLR

Captiva is a small, folding autofocus camera that shoots pictures instantly and then stores them in a see-through container in the rear of the camera. The film, which has ten images, has an ISO of 600 with built-in battery. An accessory will allow close-ups as near as 13 inches. Price is $139.

Using a camera's shutter release properly is one of the most overlooked techniques in photography. To avoid camera shake, it is helpful to keep the right index finger on the release button and and press it slowly. In vertical shots, this can be done with the right thumb.
