City of black gold
Article Abstract:
Ouro Preto, Brazil, is an ancient city where gold was found by greedy Portuguese colonizers. The city's name means black gold. The Potuguese government sent hundreds of African slaves to work and suffer in the mines. Ouro Preto was declared a World Monument City in 1980 by the UNESCO in honor of its proud and glorious past.

Golden years: Les and Idella Wade are spending their retirement years chasing a dream of gold
Article Abstract:
Les and Idella Wade, gold mill owners, are still active occasionally at the mill even after celebrating their 59th wedding anniversary in October 1997. The couple still enjoys touring visitors in the mill and museum and talking about their creation.

Gold-plated bacteria
Article Abstract:
Gold particles taken from Alaska were found to be formed by bacteria that tended to accumulate gold in their spores. Gold solutions are lethal to bacteria because they close off the cell wall pores that should be used for absorbing nutrients.
