Conqueror A.D. 1086
Article Abstract:
Sierra On-Line's $54.95 Conqueror A.D. 1086 strategy game is divided between a medieval SimCity, role-playing and action. The action consists of melees, jousting, fighting fevered battles and destroying castles. The SimCity allows for personnel management, production control and building construction. Role-playing involves forging marriage alliances and garnering hints. Winning requires performing all three aspects adequately. Despite its possession of heavy creative detail, Conqueror still fails to live up to expectations. The game's actions look better in theory than in actual play. It is deficient of strong artificial intelligence and sophisticated animation. It has middling Super VGA and lower-resolution MCGA with various unattractive static screens. The music is enjoyable but inappropriate to the time period. The game ships with poor documentation, which makes game playing even more frustrating.

Advanced Civilization
Article Abstract:
Avalon Hill's $69.95 Advanced Civilization computerized board game offers some strong strategic elements, but as a true computer game, it is a failure. Advanced Civilization is a board game of expansion and trade, where players attempt to obtain as much territory as possible and advance their civilizations' goals. The game accommodates three to eight players, combining computer and human opponents. There is little difference between each empire and all the computer-driven players act similarly. The game utilizes standard board-game vocabulary. For example, "goods" are drawn as cards instead of grown or accumulated. The game's 2-D, 16-color Super VGA graphics are well done, but they lack animation and include few help screens. There are no sound effects, other than the game's single theme, which plays over and over.

Rule the world or become part of another culture's museum display in this super strategy sequel
Article Abstract:
MicroProse Software introduces its $49.99 Sid Meier's Civilization II strategy computer game. The goal of Civilization II is to develop a successful community by utilizing resources from the surrounding environments. Users must fight off human and computer-driven foes who are also attempting to construct communities. To win the game, users must launch and maintain a space colony or destroy all other communities. Civilization II includes new resources, unit types, advancements, terrains, facilities and Wonders of the World, yet remains fundamentally the same as Civilization I. Users can construct superhighways, develop a reputation and practice counterespionage. Civilization's new features also include more realistic combat, equated firepower and hit points and more opportunities for successful missions.
