"Espionage forgeries" were printed in London
Article Abstract:
People paradropped into occupied France during World War II carried the forgeries. Scattered resistance groups were able to communicate using the fake stamps whose tiny codes verified that the messages were real. They are rarely found today since recipients usually destroyed them at once.

Older Japanese issues are noted for forgeries

Counterfeit Japanese postage stamps usually have the tiny words sanko or mozo, meaning facsimile, on them. Unaware collectors, usually foreigners, find this hard to detect and the forgery is not illegal. Techniques for forging Japanese stamps are described to help educate collectors.
