Fox Hunt
Article Abstract:
Capcom Entertainment's $64.95 Fox Hunt full-motion-video computer adventure game suffers from unoriginal action sequences and a tedious script that tries, and fails, to be funny but does offer video techniques for manipulating fight scenes. Fox Hunt's video footage is often fun to watch and the music is entertaining but these positive aspects are forgotten because the game proceeds in a random and illogical fashion. The game is a spy story that unsuccessfully attempts to create the same look as a James Bond film by using fancy gadgets and exotic locales. Also, Fox Hunt offers little puzzle solving or investigating and the game advances at its own pace. The software supports almost no actual game play and the sequences where the player participates are not challenging. Capcom's product would not have been so disappointing if the story followed a logical path and offered more interactivity.

Silent Steel
Article Abstract:
Broderbund Software Inc's Silent Steel, developed by Tsunami Media, is arguably the best submarine gaming experience around, although the actual game play gets somewhat repetitive. Silent Steel offers exceptionally clean Indeo video and a solid script. The video was filmed on location on several US Navy vessels, bringing realism to the game. The film direction is professional and the actors do a decent job of bringing out the script's humor and drama. Although the game provides 30 different endings, game play is limited. Players must select from pre-written questions and make predetermined commands and remarks during combat. The same scenes need to be replayed over and over each session until the correct dialogue choices are determined. In addition, some of the commands and their subsequent results do not make sense. Silent Steel is priced between $45 and $50.

The Beast Within
Article Abstract:
Sierra On-Line's $64.95 The Beast Within is a new full-motion video adventure game with a strong, dark storyline that will challenge both beginning and advanced players. The protagonist, Gabriel, is spending time in Germany writing a mystery novel and finds himself drawn into a real-life mystery when a young girl is killed and mutilated. Players also play the role of Gabriel's assistant, Grace Nakimura, during three chapters. Much of the game's depth comes from Grace's conversations with other characters. Game play is extremely detailed; missing a single hot spot may cause the user to fail to finish a chapter, and there are frustratingly few clues about what has been overlooked. The graphics and sound are both superb, and the game is worth the extra effort required to master it.
