Campaigns, commercials, and computers
Article Abstract:
Election campaigns have relied heavily on television for success since JFK's initiative. Political TV commercials, however, are very expensive, requiring candidates to secretly raise and spend large amounts of money. To circumvent this illegal practice, Washington has set up a computer database where all political candidates are required to periodically file complete reports of their campaign contributions and spending. These up-to-date records are then posted on the Internet by the state for public disclosure.
