Igneous ferment at Hamersley
Article Abstract:
A study by M.E. Barley and colleagues provide evidence that the Hamersley Basin (Western Australia) banded iron formations (BIF) were formed during a large tectono-magmatic event. This runs counter to the prevailing knowledge that BIFs were formed under the oceans during the Archaean and Proterozoic aeons during a relatively quiet period with no major tectonic or magmatic activity on the sea floor. The evidence presented by Barley et al. proves that somehow tectono-magmatic events and the generally held idea of tectonic quiescence coexisted during the period of deposition of BIFs.
