Step-by-step directions are presented for the preliminary stages of carving a stone into a sculpture. Before the shape can be refined, extraneous material must be removed while carefully matching the design to the maquette. The project requires intermediate level carving skills.

Beach beauties

Seattle artist Sharon Boardway has made a living out of jewelry. Her materials are mainly beach stones, sea shells, sand dollars, driftwood, water-tumbled glass and even cast-off crab claws. She won an annual art jewelry contest sponsored by Facere Jewelry Art Gallery in 1995.
