Shades of smoky

Smoky quartz remains shrouded in confusion, with the many other names by which it is called and other stones with which it has been mistakenly identified. Experts consider smoky quartz as cairngorm, especially those sourced from the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. Some of the brownish quartz, which ranges from very light to very dark, also shows a yellowish tone.

Taking the heat

Jewelry trade in the 1990s has come to accept, and adopt, the previously- denied practice of gem heating. Through heat treatments, sapphires can turn to a lovely blue hue. This practice was first traced to the Renaissance master jeweler Benvenuto Cellini.
