The biennial photographic show was the most important and exciting exposition held in many years. New developments in digital and silver-halide technologies were seen, including digital printers and autofocus SLR systems. The digital printers claim automatic elimination of redeye. Films promising greater sharpness and improved color saturation were shown. along with digital cameras with near-photographic quality.

The 1999 Photo Marketing Show in Las Vegas featured numerous new and improved digital cameras. Nikon's new 2MP CoolPix 700 ($599) was a highlight of the show, and is the lowest priced new digital camera on the market. Several other manufacturer's, including Olympus and Fuji, also introduced cameras in the 2MP format.
