The $10 million question
Article Abstract:
Origin Systems' Wing Commander IV space age action game is the most expensive computer game ever developed, and is currently dominating the computer game industry. Developed for $10 million by Electronic Arts, Wing Commander IV has TV-level production value which makes it more believable to consumers. Wing Commander IV is forcing other game developers to spend more money on development and is increasing the market entry price. To remain competitive in the industry, other game developers must add gaming elements and features not found in Wing Commander. Origin officials believe that the $10 million investment is justified, as the company only needs to sell 400,000 units to recoup its investment. Wing Commander IV is forcing other companies to be more professional and is dominating the space-combat market. The future of computer games will involve high-production story games and multiplayer online games.

Ripper
Article Abstract:
Take 2 Interactive's $59.99 Ripper action game includes stylish artwork, compelling puzzles and several movie stars, including Christopher Walken, Jimmie Walker, Burgess Meredith and Karen Allen. The game also includes full-motion video and about 30 interactive characters. In the game, users play Jake Quinlan, a Virtual Herald reporter covering the serial killings of a Jack-the-Ripper imitator in futuristic New York. After Jake's girlfriend Catherine is attacked by the Ripper, users must undertake the investigation. During the game, users must travel throughout New York to discover clues. Clues are discovered by interacting with entertaining characters, such as Detective Vincent Magnotta, Dr. Burton and Eddie Falconetti. The clues are difficult to discover, and provide users with exciting challenges. Drawbacks include cumbersome point-and-click environments and disappointing marquee elements.

Get golfing
Article Abstract:
Grolier Electronic Publishing's $49.95 Greg Norman: Ultimate Challenge Golf CD-ROM game boasts a simulation feature and an arcade mode but suffers from slow screen changes and choppy golfer animations. The simulation mode allows users to create a player from 44 golfing characteristics. Lyriq's Picture Perfect Golf: The Coeur d'Alene game suffers from poor graphics, sound and game play because the product is based on an outmoded software engine. The software displays photographs of a golf course as background and does not recognize depth or provide realistic ball action. Consumers are advised not to purchase this product. Microsoft Golf 2.0 offers a multiplayer game option but suffers from an outdated game design, poorly structured interface and shoddy video-based tips from golf professionals. The product is worthy only if users must have the multiplayer feature.
