The first postage stamp premiered in 1840

The first postage stamp was issued in 1840 in England and was called the Penny Black stamp. Before stamps, receivers of letters had to pay postage fees. Rowland Hill, a postmaster, decided it was better to make the sender pay, and that is how the stamp originated.

Benjamin Franklin and the pioneer printer-postmasters

Printers usually were made postmasters during colonial times because they printed the stamps people used for mailing. Franklin was named the first postmaster general for the US in 1775.
