The symbolic design of early Japanese stamps
Article Abstract:
The orignal plum blossom design submitted in 1871 for stamps would have symbolized Spring, the season when stamps were to be issued. But the plum blossoms design would have omitted the emperor. His picture was forbidden but since he was symbolized as a dragon, that motif was used until 1945.

Bell Telephone's cachet for #1173
Article Abstract:
Bell Telephone System played a major role in the Echo I satellite project and created 5,000 of the first day covers. Patrons who usually received programs notes for the Bell Telephone Hour received the first day covers with the special cachets. The Echo I project is described.

Ito appears on souvenir of Russian-Japanese war
Article Abstract:
The life of Prince Ito, born in 1841 and assassinated in Korea in 1909 is briefly recounted. The prince is credited with modernizing Japanese warfare. The cachet with his portrait given in 1909 as a favor at a Korean banquet in Ito's honor, is now a collectors item.
