A little light on nightshades
Article Abstract:
Solanums frequently suffer from the tendency among gardeners to scorn the entire genus, and indeed the whole Solanaceae, or nightshade, family. There are between 1,000 and 3,700 species of Solanum, including shrubs, vines, herbs, and even some trees, and they are native to every continent but Antarctica. The green parts of all are poisonous, but other elements are often nutritious, notably the potato and tomato. The variety of Solanum makes it appropriate for nearly any ornamental or vegetable garden.
