The editor's garden received heavy rain in summer 1996, which hurt his potatoes but helped many other crops. Tomatoes grew quickly but died after one harvest. Bell peppers, zucchini and lemon balm, which really works as a mosquito repellant, grew wild. His roses seemed to grow normally.

Modern urban Americans' views on wilderness are far too romanticized. By imagining that wilderness is a superior, 'natural' state, urbanites find it easier to forgive the squalor of the metropolis.
