Barbarians at our gates
Article Abstract:
Invasive exotic weeds are an increasingly expensive and destructive influence on North America's ecology. A record number of individuals and organizations are fighting the trend, but it continues to get little funding or attention. In the US, aquatic plant control is a $100 million business, attracting govt and university work through the US Dept of Agriculture and its subsidiary groups, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and the Agricultural Research Service, plus scientific and environmental groups.

Happy hunting
Article Abstract:
Mail-ordering plants is much more satisfying for customer and vendor alike if common-sense guidelines are followed in placing and handling an order. These include ordering early, perhaps for a fall planting; being aware of substitution and refund policies; knowing how to treat the plants once they arrive; and calling or faxing before ordering to ensure availability. A top-ten list of ways to avoid problems is included, and several anecdotal incidents are described.

The aspen's Autumn alchemy
Article Abstract:
The aspen is the most common tree in North America, but fire control policies may be threatening it. Aspens benefit from periodic fires, due to their method of clonal reproduction through root structures. As conifers are allowed to grow in the shadow of the aspen without threat from periodic fires, they may displace their original hosts. Controlled burn policies are now being tested by the forest services.
