Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the essentials of plant nutrition. Nitrogen hastens growth of a plant's leaves and stems. Phosphorus helps roots grow and take nutrients from the soil and helps in ensuring blooms and fruits. Potassium provides plants with protection against cold and diseases.

Mulching soils saves time in watering and improves soil and plant beds. Mulch usually consists of decomposing leaves and some kitchen wastes. Among mulch materials gardeners can choose from are cocoa hulls, compost, dead leaves, grass clippings, shredded bark, tree trimmings, and wood chips.
