St. Louis, MO, is a prosperous city which has registered a significant economic growth in the 1990s. The city is the 16th largest metropolitan area and a good business place for many industries including construction and retail. Home improvement retailers such as Builders Square, Home Quarters, Home Depot, Sears Hardware and 84 Lumber operate in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Hardware stores are offering quality building materials to professional home remodelers and builders.

Sear CEO outlines chain's comeback in keynote speech

Sears, Roebuck Chmn and CEO Arthur C. Martinez says that the remarkable turnaround the giant retailer has made since 1992 is the result of the comprehensive changes he instituted. Speaking at the 1996 National Hardware Show, Martinez said that the changes allowed Sears to develop some insights that hardware retailers and manufacturers could apply to their own enterprises. The changes Martinez made included laying off 50,000 workers.

Ace, Minnesota Project plan eco-store prototype

Ace Hardware Corp is participating in the Minnesota Pollution Prevention Project, whose aim is to create a more environmentally sound store model. The Water Foundation conceived the project, which is being funded by a $32.500 state grant. The foundation, attempting to identify current environmental practices and determine ways of improving them, has completed on-site assessments at six Ace stores.
