Making peace with black walnuts
Article Abstract:
Black walnut trees produce a toxin that affects many plants but careful planning and research can make them a part of an attractive garden. Many wildflowers flourish near them, as do a number of domesticated plants. The poison, juglone, is an alleopathic chemical that apparently blocks the xylem of some plants by causing callus buildup. It causes plants to wilt, initially in the terminal shoots. Plants close to the tree or with shallow root systems will not tap into the black walnuts' roots and can often thrive.
