A personal opinion is expressed on the state of the US antiques collectibles market. As disposable income fuels the market, the economic downturn seen in the first part of 2001 will take a toll, yet key aspects of the collectibles business are flourishing. Internet trading has provided new access and scope for buyers and sellers, and promoters are driving demand.

Issues concerning the roles of shills in auctions are discussed. It is emphasized that shills intervene in auctions to increase the price and offer incentives. The use of shills in Internet auctions and Internet auction practices are particularly focused upon.
