Roger Tory Peterson: a birder looks to the ground
Article Abstract:
Roger Tory Peterson is best known for his bird manuals but he also has an abiding love of wildflowers and has published enormously successful books on them as well. He considers himself primarily an artist, though the system he developed for identification revolutionized birding and writing and education remain a major part of his work. His experiences with and passion for flowers are discussed, as are planting to attract birds and butterflies.

Different types of nomenclatures, such as the binomial nomenclature used by horticulturist and taxonomists are needed to have a standard worldwide system to communicate about plants. Various difficulties encountered by gardeners and marketing folks in studying the Latin names used in these two types are discussed.
