2nd half: maybe better, but still tough: not so great expectations

The expected second half gains in the industry were thought to be aided by tax cuts and a strong economy. However the surge has failed to materialize and many leading executives have tempered their forecasts. Consumer spending is expected to rise as consumer confidence increases. The retailers show cautious optimism for modest gains in all areas of the industry.

The spring-fall show storm
Article Abstract:
Beginning in March of 1984 all national home furnishings trade shows will be on a spring-fall schedule. The only exception to this is the consumer electronics show. Department stores are in favor of this. Manufactures look forward to fewer shows a year.
