Roberds has appointed its chief financial officer, Bob Wilson, as president of the company. The appointment of Wilson, as well as the hiring of more employees, are part of the company's efforts to consolidate operations and improve its business. Wilson will continue to report to the company's new CEO Melvin Baskin, who will eventually be responsible for merchandising stores and marketing functions. Wilson's responsibility will be to supervise support-related functions. Roberds is trimming down its work force but hiring top performers, as part of its growth strategy.

Gabbert's McKee resigns

Gabberts President Steve McKee has stepped down from his position to pursue other business options. Gabberts Chairman and CEO Jim Gabbert, who has taken up McKee's responsibilities, stated that the firm is not looking for another president to assume the vacant position. McKee first entered Gabberts in 1987 as the general store manager in Texas and was appointed president in 1995. Gabberts, which has three full-line stores in Texas, reported a total revenue of $111 million in 1997, earning a No. 33 ranking in Furniture/Today's Top 100 Furniture Stores list.
