Mfrs. win skirmish
Article Abstract:
Upholstered furniture makers have won their fight to forestall a flammability ruling that would require upholstery fabrics to be treated with fire-retardant chemicals. The move came late on Jul. 29, 1998, as the 1999 appropriations measure for the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was taken up by the House of the Representatives. However, Representative Roger Wicker, R-MS, initiated a rider on the measure. The rider would compel the CPSC to forestall releasing an upholstery flammability ruling until the toxicity of the chemical fire retardants that would be utilized to treat upholstery fabrics is evaluated by outside scientists.
