A scientific approach to successful selection
Article Abstract:
Allied Breweries decided in 1983 that it needed to become more customer service-oriented, with the result that its Joshua Tetley and Son trading company decided to examine ways to improve its selection system for pub managers. The company chose to be the first UK company to use a selection method developed by the US company Selection Research Inc. A study involving focus groups of Tetley executives and interviews with the company's most successful pub managers revealed 18 themes which could predict a pub manager's potential for success. Six questions relating to each theme were developed. The selection instrument was then tested on 100 pub managers and their partners, confirming the value of the process. Since Mar 1984 the system has been used for Tetley's three types of recruits: those who respond to advertisements, those who are referred by area managers, and unsolicited applications. The system has also helped reduce turnover from 26% to 17%. A revised version of the program is used throughout Allied Breweries.

Are references worth the paper they're written on?
Article Abstract:
Personnel managers are not always aware of the skills and judgment required to give appropriate references to departing staff or to make employee references truly useful when recruiting personnel. It is important to be aware that giving references can have risks including risk of deceit and defamation. Personnel professionals need to learn to develop neutral written references which discuss employees realistically without directly stating negative traits. When checking references, a two-step process is recommended. Personnel professionals should contact previous employers to confirm past positions and accomplishments before making offers of employment. Once references are confirmed, employment offers can be extended, dependent on receiving satisfactory references from current employers.

Headhunting without tears
Article Abstract:
Personnel departments can effectively recruit executives through the careful selection and use of an executive search firm. The most important factors to consider when selecting a search firm are its knowledge about a particular industry, its record of success, and the personality and expertise of its consultants. Each phase of the recruitment process should be monitored by the personnel director because the personnel department is ultimately responsible for the success of the project.
