Copeland Borough Council and Sugar for Industry adopt smoking policies - a case of horses for courses
Article Abstract:
Copeland Burrough Council, which adopted a smoking policy in 1992, has adopted a voluntary approach and involved employees in the process of policy formulation. A joint management-union working party, which was set up in Feb 1990, assessed the situation taking into consideration some employees' concerns about passive smoking. Questionnaires sent to various level of staff at different times helped gauge employees' response to the situation. The voluntary compliance to the smoking policy created problems in some shared offices. Further discussion helped settle the matter in 1993.

Jobsharing innovations at Barnet Council
Article Abstract:
The London Borough of Barnet has expanding its equal employment opportunity policies to treat all of its jobs as open to job sharing, unless a specific case for exemption can be made by a senior manager. Recent increases in the proportion of the Borough's job-sharing arrangements are attributed to the change in policy.
