Does insurance coverage dictate mental health care?
Article Abstract:
There is a danger that efforts to contain health care costs may result in overcorrection, and that mental health care coverage may deteriorate. One motive behind recent acceptance of employee assistance programs is that they are seen as ensuring that funds spent on mental health care services are expended more efficiently. Research tends to support the notion that outpatient mental health treatment is as effective as inpatient services, but the wording of many insurance plans tends to push patients toward expensive hospitalization. A basic goal for mental health care program cost containment should be to encourage the use of approved outpatient services. It should be acknowledged that counseling is a slow process. Very few outpatient clients can obtain relief in the eight therapy sessions or less commonly allowed by mental health coverage.

The private medical insurance market in Russia
Article Abstract:
Multinational companies intent on establishing medical insurance programs in Russia need to understand that benefit coverage and access are significantly different from those available in developed markets. Benefit schemes and provider choices can help obtain premiums. It is also advantageous to adapt managed care tools and techniques through hands-on administration of costly diagnostic procedures and hospitalization cases. However, employers must be discriminate in selecting an insurer because many insurance firms are saddled with insolvency.

When is inpatient mental health care necessary?
Article Abstract:
Programs for psychiatric precertification review should assure that only appropriate and necessary care are offered in the right setting, and that the highest care standards are provided for and maintained. Developments in treatments and new psychotropic drugs have reduced the need for prolonged hospitalizations. Reduced stigma associated with mental illness results in more employers including mental health coverage in benefit plan packages. Employee assistance programs and outside support groups can provide supplementary outpatient care.
