Justifying the investment
Article Abstract:
Utility Analysis (UA) is an advanced cost-benefit analysis technique that is useful for reaching decisions regarding investment in the personnel function. UA can measure net benefits from a personnel program; its three basic elements are quality, quantity, and cost. An example is presented which demonstrates the application of UA to sophisticated Civil Service Commission (CSC) selection procedures. UA indicates that based on the most conservative assumptions, one year's use of the CSC's assessment center technique for selecting fast-stream administrators saves about 1.8 million pounds sterling.

Property investment in Europe
Article Abstract:
Property investment in Europe will remain viable as growth is expected at 10% per annum between 1998 and 1999 but will happen only if property markets give institutional investors what they want. There is a need to further develop vehicles offering investors direct undiluted property exposure. Moreover, there is also a need to give investors a wider array of generally accepted performance benchmarks that would be used to gauge portfolios and managers.

Avoiding disappointment in investment manager selection
Article Abstract:
The selection processes of investment management firms present risk of disappointment and various problems, most of which are instances of double reversion. The keys to an effective selection of investment firms include a direct research that involves developing very detailed views of fund management firms, with an estimate of their future potential. Choosing a wide variety of potential candidates from such a research is also effective.
