The pros and cons of annual hour programs
Article Abstract:
Annual hour work policies offer tremendous flexibility to companies. Under an annualized work arrangement, employees are hired on the basis of a prescribed number of work hours in a year. Organizations like Express Foods, Independent Television News (ITN), and the Strathkelvin District Council have adopted such annual hour programs. However, employees have expressed varied reactions to the implementation of annual hours policies. Employees at Express Foods have been very receptive to the fixed schedule work hour structure, that is marked by weekend working, since it provides a better gauge of the number of hours they have worked and need to work. Unions at both ITN and the Strathkelvin District Council, on the other hand, have protested the indirect discrimination, questionability of industrial safety and pay reductions resulting from the annual hours program.
