Disability post-ADA
Article Abstract:
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is changing employer attitudes toward people who are handicapped. Instead of believing that the 43 million disabled US citizens are all incapable of working, the law is causing employers to consider ability as a basis for hiring decisions. Employers are also seeking ways to improve their relationships with workers who become disabled on the job. Thus, by encouraging companies to hire, retain and retrain the disabled, the act will help employers, insurers and the government save millions of dollars by helping the disabled become self-sufficient.

West stated that these claimants should be treated with compassion, while several other speakers claimed that they should be pursued at the first sign of fraud. West claimed that the industry should treat claimants with empathy to improve its poor image. Others stated that examiners must be more aggressive in identifying fraud because of the increasing prevalence of fraud triggered by the recession.
