US insurance firms should consider expanding internationally to capture a slice of the growing global market. Insurance business is expanding rapidly around the world, and those firms with enough capital to form their own global network will find plenty of opportunity. About 96% of those US firms that are exporting products or services are small- to medium-sized firms. Insurance companies that are considering international operations must deal with cultural differences, licensing, staffing and other special problems as they expand.

Insurance companies can add value to their business and help defray the costs of insurance claims overall by seeking to prevent problems before they occur. This is best exemplified by insurance industry's role in expanding seatbelt regulations, child restraint laws, and the recent battle over high technology theft. By partnering with consumer groups and their corporate clients, insurers can improve their clients' lives while reducing their own risk in coverage.
