Mitigating catastrophic losses

Homeowners' insurance companies are developing new techniques to ensure that their losses are reduced, especially in catastrophe-prone areas. Boston, MA-based Insurance Institute for Property Loss Reduction is working with state and city officials in Los Angeles, CA, to assist homeowners to retrofit their homes to prevent substantial earthquake damage. This project is the largest private/public sector project to prevent losses and it will cost approximately $1 million.

Program will test ability to cut losses

The Insurance Institute for Property Loss Reduction plans to make Los Angeles, CA, homes more earthquake resistant. Initial estimates could cost homeowners between $3,500 and $5,000 per home. The structures to be retrofitted would be single-story wood-framed homes built between 1940 and 1980. The program will evaluate each home and ensure that the work is done correctly.
