Nine-month review of property/casualty insurers
Article Abstract:
Best's nine-month review of property and casualty insurers includes an update of 2,468 ratings assigned in spring 1992. Current estimates are based on financial statements up to Dec 10, 1992. Hurricane loss estimates are included. In all, 2,250 nine-month statements were reviewed. Eighty ratings have been modified; three companies have been put on the ratings watch list; and 20 companies have been placed under review. Of the 200 companies that could not be reviewed, only 15 have been assigned Best's letter ratings.

Alist of insurance companies provides current ratings, previous ratings and a short explanation of the factors that influenced the decision. For instance, Abeille Reassurances, located in NY, received an A- (excellent). The company's prior rating was NA-3, meaning it had been in business for too short a time for a conclusive decision. Also included are expanded explanations of the ratings of certain companies that were rated excellent (A-, A and A+).

Article Abstract:
The 1992 Best's Ratings for 329 property and casualty insurers are listed and compared to the 1991 results. The ratings are based on the evaluation of insurers' financial soundness and their ability to meet policyholders' obligations. The companies receiving ratings of A+ include Accredited Surety and Casualty, American Live Stock Insurance Co and Amica Mutual Insurance Co.
