Chasing the runaway equities market

Equities are being offered to the public by a growing number insurance agents, spurred by the bull market of the mid- and late-1990s, and a career agent can receive two-thirds of his or her income from commission income. From 1995 to 1996 mutual fund sales through broker/dealers increased by 47%, according to the Life Insurance Marketing and Research Assn International. Insurance sales by career agents also dropped from 1986 to 1995.

A managed care checkup

New evaluation methods should give insurance agents and brokers some of the tools they need to sell managed healthcare plans. In Feb 1995, The National Committee for Quality Assurance will rate 21 managed care plans. The ratings will encompass criteria such as customer satisfaction, operating costs and quality of care. Employers and others are using Hedis categories make their own assessments of managed care plans.
