Strength, strategy or both?
Article Abstract:
The health and life insurance industry will face numerous challenges during 1995, as firms did during 1994. Public concerns over insurance firms have changed their focus from solvency issues to market conduct issues. However, the overall economic climate has improved. Life insurers will still have to deal with new regulations, changing consumer preferences and more competition. Insurance firms will also have to deal with lower earnings.

Interest rate swings inspire new strategies
Article Abstract:
Life and health insurance companies will need to develop investment strategies that take into account the volatility of interest rates and innovations in accounting and regulation. These insurance companies will need to realize that investment flexibility is not what it once was and that financial strength may be affected by these new regulations. A new model investment law is also being considered for implementation in 1995.

Sharpening the focus on investment management
Article Abstract:
Life insurance companies will place greater emphasis on investment management in 1997 and into the 21st century. Credit-quality problems of the early 1990s and interest-sensitive asset problems of the mid-1990s have contributed to the focus on the asset management. Many companies are likely to outsource some or all of their asset management duties to outside vendors.
