This article examines the potential for utilizing US military power 10 years after the end of the Cold War, focusing on the emergence of new and unpredictable threats, and non-traditional missions. Issues include the dynamic security environment, the US asymmetric edge and its leverage, and the quadrennial defense review and national security strategy of George W. Bush's administration.

Article Abstract:

The author describes asymmetric strategies as tactics used to undermine an opponents strengths and exploit his weaknesses through economic, military, political and technological means. The U.S. pursued asymmetric strategies during the Cold War, but since the 1990s the has needed to adapt its policies to encompass a wider range of threats.
