A response to chaos: the United States, the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution, 1961-1968
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the responses of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations toward the turbulence in China brought on by the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. The author, asserting each administration adopted different approaches, examines the Kennedy hardline approach consistent with the policies of the 1950s, and Johnson's more flexible position which facilitated Nixon's efforts to strengthen Sino-American relations.

Are there other ways to think about the 'Great Interregnum"?
Article Abstract:
This article examines Sino-American relations during the 1950s and 60s. The author focuses on the "Great Interregnum", the twenty years of nonrecognition existing between the United States and China, and argues the best way to understand the relationship is through the application of a cultural contextual analysis.
