Central Europe: a shift to the left?
Article Abstract:
The debate in the West over the revival of communism in the countries of Central Europe is based on erroneous perceptions. What is actually happening is a logical and natural outcome of the transitional phase in a society that is moving toward liberal democracy. Liberalisation has led to economic disparity and hence the emergence of a middle class required to support the democracy has been slow. The eagerness shown by these countries to acquire the membership of the European Union and NATO are healthy signs for the future of democracy in the region.

To create a United Nations fire brigade
Article Abstract:
A standing United Nation force will be useful in situations which demand immediate military intervention to avoid humanitarian disasters such as the conflicts in Somalia or Rwanda. The UN force should comprise volunteers from different countries and countries can share the cost of maintenance. Objections raised to the formation of such an UN force on legal and military grounds are not very strong. However, with out the support of the US government the establishment of the force will not materialize.

A Europe of nations - or the nation of Europe?
Article Abstract:
Recent history has seen the forging of international agreements and the collapse of traditional nations to be divided into several smaller nation-states. Two factors can be cited for this phenomenon. One is the perception of political inequality among different peoples inhabiting the same nation, and two is the uneven ethno-history among peoples and between cultures. Based on this reasoning, the integration of Europe cannot be immediately completed nor can there be a European nation.
